Charting a Course

In her professional life, Y. wears many hats: by day, a consultant with a boutique agency and by night, increasingly branching into a variety of artistic mediums.

What drew you to MKLC and what was the problem you were seeking to solve?

I met Maya at a group session she was offering. At the time, I was thinking about finding a coach for my career. And in that session, I really appreciated Maya’s take on energy, habit and using routines to unlock creativity.

In the beginning I wasn’t really clear on what I wanted but I knew I needed some help deciding where to focus. I quickly came to understand that I was seeking clarity in terms of how to approach decisions in a multi-faceted career. I was anxious about the future state of my work. With my fingers in so many pies, I have to choose between competing demands and select the career moves that make the most sense—not always obvious.

What were your initial impressions and what started to change right away?

Maya’s approach is exploratory. She is definitely an open and curious person, and that prompted me to be more open and curious.

Together we embarked on her Compass Program and worked on soft-visioning for my career.

Once we aligned that vision with a compass for my decision-making, my motivation and confidence started to click.

Maya helped me find clarity about what I want and how to position myself, and with that confidence came decisiveness.

Maya helped me embrace the diversity of my professional life, rather than run away from it. I had this sense that, because I was spread across different fields, I should really just pick a lane and stay in it. But Maya helped me see that in my case, the complexity and different layers of my professional endeavours are an asset, not a hindrance.

What feels different about your days now?

Intentionality. Understanding how I use my time and energy has made me more intentional about applying different structures throughout my day to unlock my creativity. My days feel like they are more aligned with my long-term aspirations. I’ve made meaningful progress and it’s showing up in my career advancement.

What would you say to someone considering working with MKLC?

Especially in a post-COVID world, with everything we’ve learned about ourselves, we should all have a heightened appreciation for the value of designing our time in a way that truly reflects who we are and what we hope to achieve. I know that sounds simple but then why do so many people spend their days being pulled in directions not of their choosing? When left to your own devices, sure you have good intentions but let’s be honest, you don’t know how to follow through.

Maya will take you on a journey that is thoughtful, reflective and patient. She will help you feel your way into what is right for you, honour the things that truly matter to you and design structures that ensure your values and aspirations are showing up in the way you spend your time.
