A good feeling
H first encountered MKLC when Maya was brought in to facilitate a strategy session with the company’s senior leadership team, of which she was a part. H recognized early on that Maya’s insights were something she needed more of. First, H wanted to better define her own role, what she wanted out of her work, and how to achieve it. Second, H knew Maya’s expertise would be invaluable to the larger team she was managing. H set out to bring Maya in to work with her key managers and to conduct group workshops to help support the professional growth of everyone on H’s team.
Seeing things differently
“My work with Maya has impacted not just my approach, but also what I want out of my work life,” H told us. “I now have an increased ability to see different perspectives earlier on and invite others to speak before I jump in. In many ways, working with MKLC has taught me how to slow down and look at things a little differently. I’ve learned how to teach other people the things I know, and that has been so important with what I am trying to accomplish with the team. It is like our work together has taught me patience, and that patience is something I see pay off all the time now. With a stronger sense of where I am going and how I am going to get there, I don’t feel as rushed.”
Supporting the team
H and other colleagues now bring Maya in to work with the larger team when they have identified an issue that they want to get to the other side of, such as how to make sure the team feels like they have enough time to get it all done and not feel overwhelmed, or learning how to be more present in meetings with each other and with clients.
“We never know the answers when we start out, but we now know that when we work through the problem together, we will find them,” H said. “The team has reacted so positively to the workshops. It comes up in the recaps team members regularly submit – every time we have MKLC in, the staff all praise how helpful and positive the experience was. Coming out of those sessions they feel like they are empowered—that they have more agency over their time—and that shows up in their work.”
Making changes
from the top down
MKLC has also worked with the senior leadership team to change the way the business functions. “Our leadership team has worked with Maya on everything from the structure of our organization to our culture to redefining how our various roles will progress as we grow and evolve. The biggest change for us is that we now do things differently, from creating new pathways for team members to advance down and building out roles differently to the way we intake new clients to just reworking our internal organization so that it works so much better for us. We have seen a direct impact of our work with MKLC from the top right down through the whole organization, which has been especially helpful as we manage through a period of accelerated growth.”
