Growing the team

D. is a co-founder and CEO rapidly scaling a business to meet growing demand in Canada and the U.S.

What drew you to work with MKLC—what were you seeking to achieve?

I first reached out to Maya because my team was having trouble fitting it all into the day and they weren’t feeling like they were making traction. As a rapidly growing business in a digital and ever-changing landscape, I knew we had to be proactive and act on what our employees were telling us. We had an initial call with MKLC to explore the challenges we were facing as a business and brought Maya in to lead a time management workshop for our team.

What were your initial impressions—what started to change right away?

We were really impressed and pleased that we decided to bring Maya in. She thinks differently than me or my business partner, so brought a whole new perspective to our work. And right away our team was able to implement the strategies that Maya taught them. Their days became more spacious and more productive. And most important they felt heard.  The interesting thing was they all took something different away from the workshop and are still benefitting from the techniques and strategies Maya shared with us.

What is one thing that really stood out for you?

After the workshop we brought Maya in to facilitate and helps us reflect on our hiring process (where we’d made a few wrong moves). That involved a brainstorm with our senior team about our ideal employee and led us to places that were beyond what we’d expected. It became a kind of discovery process for our business that unlocked all sorts of new insights and ideas. We ended up with a new approach to both hiring and onboarding that has given us the capacity to spend less time managing new hires and more time building our business.

What would you say to someone considering working with Maya?

When you’re the leader of a business, with your sleeves rolled up and your hands in the dirt, it can be very difficult to look at your operation from a different perspective or a high level.  Getting that outside set of eyes is super helpful and Maya is fantastic. She is incredibly bright, and especially for businesses on a growth trajectory, it is really useful to have someone Maya’s  background and perspective to bounce ideas off of.  From the top down, Maya has changed the way we work—way beyond what we could have imagined when we first reached out. I would encourage anyone with growth potential to reach out to her and hear her thoughts.
